My name is Marge Newmaster.
I am running for re-election to the WBLAS School Board.

I want to use my experience as a WBLAS District 624 educator, community member and parent since the 1970s, and give back to the district I love. I began working as a library media specialist at Lakeaires Elementary, taught high school German and was the library media specialist at North Campus for over thirty years. I have been a member of the WBLAS School Board since 2016.

My education at the University of Minnesota includes a BS in Education (German, Spanish), MA in Library Science and PhD in Curriculum and Instructional systems (1999).

My son, Kyle (class of 1993) and daughter, Brooke (class of 1997) are WBLAS graduates.

My volunteer activities include: Board Member Korean Cultural Association (a nonprofit supporting cultural heritage events and activities for international adoptees and the community); international visitor host; volunteer parent and educator in WBLAS for a wide variety of student activities, fundraisers, Bond and Levy campaigns.

I dream of a community where all district residents and community partners are engaged in the education of our children; each student is the primary agent in their learning; diversity is respected, welcomed and celebrated; social equity is championed and our learning environments ensure the academic, social and emotional growth of all of our students. I support the mission and promise of our district strategic plan, and applaud the work of hundreds of community members who collaborated to develop the plan.

I was elected to the WBLAS School Board in 2016 and I would like to continue serving our students and school community as a board member. Thank you for your consideration!

Our district strategic plan promises to "provide access to a broad range of opportunities for all students" and "ensure learning environments enhance students' educational experience." I would like to see this promise kept for our elementary students with the reinstatement of the elementary library media program which school administration completely eliminated spring 2019. I believe our Library Media Specialists are crucial school staff members who prepare students for informed living in an information-rich society, provide access to resources and technology, teach digital literacy, collaborate with other teachers and ensure the unique interests and needs of individual students are met.

Please check out these links to research on the library media program -- School Libraries Work! and Media Specialist Licensure -- and support reinstatement of the WBLAS elementary library media program. A remodeled library media center without a library media specialist and program is an empty promise. If you feel that our elementary libraries should have librarians and a robust library media program, please write your thoughts to:
